llluminations is an independent media producer and publisher
We specialise in making and distributing films about the arts and performance, and we also produce media about religion, history and ideas. Our daily blog is about these films, and about the arts, the future of television and digital media in general.
BROADCAST: thirty years of programmes
We have produced more than 250 documentaries and performance films for television, and we have worked with numerous artists and creative filmmakers. Visual art is a particular focus, but so too is dance, music and the theatre, as well as historical subjects and religious topics.
Recent productions include Hamlet (2009) with David Tennant, Macbeth (2010) with Patrick Stewart, and the Royal Shakespeare Company Julius Caesar (2012). Our work has been recognised by both an International Emmy and a BAFTA, as well as numerous other awards and festival screenings. We are proud of our international reputation for intelligent and innovative filmmaking.
There’s much more about our history here.
PUBLISHING: DVDs, iPad apps and educational licensing
As well as continuing to work with broadcasters and digital channels, we produce, publish and distribute an outstanding catalogue of DVDs. All of these can be bought directly through this website, and licenced for educational or museum use.
During 2012 we collaborated with digital publishers Touch Press, Faber and Faber and The Arden Shakespeare on a highly praised version of Shakespeare’s Sonnets for the iPad, and we also created media for the Touch Press/Egmont War Horse iPad app. In 2013 we released a box set of the BBC series An Age of kings (1960), unseen in the UK for more than 50 years.

SERVICES: media for museums and cultural organisations
We also create educational and promotional media with and for a wide range of museums, galleries, performance companies and other organisations. We put collaboration at the heart of this work and we aim to achieve exceptional quality even on modest budgets.
Recent clients include Tate, the National Gallery, the Hepworth Wakefield and the Royal Collection, and films made with us have been used online, presented in exhibitions, projected on outdoor screens and given away on memory sticks. More details on our partners are here.
Plus, we have an extensive library of archive material, especially about the visual arts in Britain since 1990, and we would be delighted to help you with any enquiries about clip sales.
Information about all of our projects and programmes can be found here, but do please contact us if you have any thoughts or questions.
