On a recent lunch hour my colleague Yoni and I headed down to nearby Finsbury Square to visit the exhibition of collaborative work by Richard Deacon and Bill Woodrow in the corporate art gallery of Bloomberg SPACE. The building provides a magnificent lofty space for Deacon and Woodrow’s sculptures made almost entirely of glass.
The first room, which contains works named after days of the week, is like an eccentric office foyer with seven ultra chic coffee tables. They gleam and glisten, particularly the faceted black jewels that float on top, and while patently contemporary the materials and setting contrast with the translucent Jurassic mammoths that migrate across the surface.
Similarly, the genie lamps or ‘witches bottles’ suspended in glass cabinets from the balcony of the atrium, with lids made of pointing children’s fists are both mythical and modern, with their bright shiny twisting exteriors.
In Illuminations’ film theEYE: Richard Deacon, the artist insists “I’ve always enjoyed collaborating and I don’t feel that my creativity’s exclusive. I think there are elements of the studio practice itself which are quite collaborative.” The film also features sequences from the pair’s show Lead Ashtray at New Art Centre, Roche Court in 2004. Deacon explains that the partnership started as an exchange but has now become a creative entity in itself.
