Synopsis

Dance Britannia is a dance history of Britain in the 20th century.

The series is based on documentary archive of ordinary people dancing - skipping round maypoles, waltzing through tearooms, jiving in village halls and raving as the sun comes up.

The series will be not only be about British people enjoying themselves but also a fascinating social and cultural history of Britain over the last hundred years.

By showing how our dancing has changed, the series tells a story about how both Britain and our sense of ourselves has changed. By examining the British as dancers, it explores that elusive subject - British identity.
